Character Info
◎ Character's Name: Takeda Takahashi
◎ Character's Canon: Mortal Kombat
◎ Character's Age: Pegging him at about 23 - canon’s pretty vague, but it’s common consensus that the “Kombat Kids” are in their late teens/early 20’s due to the 25-year timeskip between MK9 and MKX – and Takeda, Cassie and Jacqui are all shown to be in their mid/late teens at least during their appearances in the MKX prequel comics.
◎ Canon Point: Post MKX main story
◎ Background/History: cue techno theme – MORTAL KOMBAT!!!!
◎ Is the character a hacker and/or do they have a sixth-sense? Some sixth sense, thanks to the fact that he has inherited his father Kenshi’s psychic abilities.
◎ Personality: When first introduced, Takeda’s a fairly quiet and reserved individual, if maybe a bit on the sarcastic side when talking to both enemies and allies alike, displayed in his introduction conversations with the great majority of the cast. In fact, the only character he seems to show utmost respect for is Hanzo Hasashi, due to the former wraith being Takeda’s sensei and essentially father-figure. While not as hot-blooded as some of his teammates and much more outwardly gentle in his way of speaking, he is the sort of individual who tries to look at the whole situation before acting, and is quick to adapt his role in a given situation in order to help, which usually ends up being reserved for acting as the voice of reason. Major examples of this calm and rational train of thought that he tries to adopt include reminding both Cassie and Kung Jin to stay focused on their mission before they broke out into an argument that could blow their cover while in Outworld and talking down Hanzo when he was trying to kill Sub-Zero in the comics by reminding him of not only why they were there in the first place but also their overarching goal of reviving the Shirai Ryu, in which the act in and of itself should be considered a feat considering Hanzo’s vengeful streak.
He didn’t start out this way: in fact, Takeda was more likely to run away from any sort of confrontation when he was younger. It was only through his training and a certain chain of events that he started gaining the will to fight to protect those that he cared about as well as be able to stand up to them in order to remind them of what they needed to do, and surprise, it worked out pretty well in his favor. If Takeda considers you an ally, he will do whatever he can in order to help, and especially if your goals align with his or for the greater good. While not exactly the most sheltered in the usual sense, when compared to his teammates, however, Takeda probably has the least amount of experience in dealing with social gatherings in general, mostly due to the fact that he was raised in isolation with ninjas for a good portion of his life. He’s not socially awkward per se, but gatherings or large crowds usually force him to want to stick to the sidelines unless something catches his attention immediately, leaving the talking to those that are more comfortable in that sort of situation. He will, however, pipe up with support if need be or as mentioned before, he’s needed to act as the voice of reason.
Despite this, Takeda is only human, and he has been prone to flying off the handle once in a while, usually if the situation devolves into threatening someone he cares about or bringing up the subject of his parents. Talking about his mother’s murder via the Red Dragon is the number one way to get him to launch into a raging fury, shown mostly through flashbacks and one particular intro in the game’s versus mode proper. Not even Kenshi is exempt from this, though most of the time it’s because he ended up pushing that button. Part of this also comes from the fact that Takeda, while having somewhat reconciled with Kenshi in the last five years, still has a major chip on his shoulder regarding his father and the fact that he hadn’t been a part of his life for a good majority of it. One could even say that even now in Takeda’s eyes, he views the Shirai Ryu and Hanzo as his family more than his own biological father. It’s only the promise that father and son would go after Suchin’s murderers that Takeda even considered reconciling with Kenshi in the first place. This shows two things: one, that Takeda can be quite the wrathful individual, harboring grudges for quite a while depending on how deeply he’s perceived to be hurt; and two, it shows that he can (eventually) push past preconceived notions about others if they share a common goal. He’s no stranger to weird alliances – after all, he and his team have fought against revenants, bug-people, and even a fallen god, and his sensei used to essentially be a hellwraith before he was able to regain his humanity.
◎ Powers/Abilities: Having been trained by one of Earthrealm’s most powerful fighters, Takeda is no slouch in combat, preferring to dual-wield metal whips in order to stun, incapacitate, reel in, and of course outright dismember and murder opponents. These whips also have retractable blades embedded into them for extra damage potential. Takeda’s shown to be incredibly proficient with them (as shown in his normal moveset as well as his Lasher variation, the latter of which specializes in using these to devastating effect) as well as being able to use other weapons, such as explosive kunai (which can be detonated remotely) and swords (one of his other variations, Ronin, specializes in usinglightsabers pulse blades alongside his blade-whips). Outside of weapon mastery and hand-to-hand combat skill, having been trained as essentially a ninja assassin, Takeda also has some degree of knowledge in the realm of stealth, having been on missions alongside his master Hanzo Hasashi (formerly the wraith Scorpion) without being detected outright.
Thanks to his father, Takeda also has a degree of psychic powers. While he hasn’t been shown to be able to use telekinesis like Kenshi, he is able to use telepathy. He mainly uses this in order to communicate with allies silently as well as to read into his opponent’s minds to give himself an edge. However, he is still learning and can suffer from feedback if the target is mentally prepared or outright more powerful than he is when being read (see: attempting to read Ermac [a literal container for thousands of souls in a body] and almost being reduced to a gibbering mess). He also has mentioned that his telepathy tends to work better on Earthrealm citizens, hence his surprise when he could easily read Erron Black’s mind, signifying to him that the gunslinger was originally from Earthrealm rather than Outworld. Another use of his ability has been shown when he’s able to psychically project “white noise” into someone’s mind to temporarily overload their senses and render them unconscious (he did this while he and the others in the Special Forces team were captured by Kotal Khan by doing the trick to a guard who had brought them food). However, the effect is obviously only temporary and he can only pull it off at fairly close range (read: literally standing next to them).
◎ Weapons & Other Special Inventory:Combat – whoop, sorry - Kombat suit with retractable blade-whips, Shirai Ryu ninja mask
CEREALIA-Specific
◎ Element: Fire – some of Takeda’s moves involve him being temporarily coated in flames as he teleports (only in Shirai Ryu variation, honestly I’m not counting it in his actual powers because it’s never actually shown in story, just in gameplay), much like his master. He’s also a passionate individual who tries to live for the present.
◎ Sense: Touch – Takeda is a fairly tactile person, often giving his teammates reassurance with a pat on the shoulder or something to let them know that he’s there for him.
◎ Seven Character Traits: Focused, proud, caring | Wrathful, fixated, sheltered | Reserved
